Inside Every Texan’s Organization Restructure

At Every Texan, we’ve long said that our state’s greatest resource is our people. That fundamental truth is also reflected within our organization – Every Texan’s staff is our greatest resource in building an equitable, multiracial democracy in our state.

Equity is a core pursuit in everything we do, including our workplace. But equity is not just about fair and just outcomes, it is also about the process –– how we operate as an organization, how we create space for staff to step into decision-making processes, and how we share power.

We spent much of this year realigning to ensure our team is positioned to do its best work internally and in the larger social justice ecosystem. Alongside a new strategic plan, part of the realignment includes an organizational restructuring designed to support more equitable, inclusive, and decentralized participation in all aspects of our work.

As an unionized, Black- and Brown-led organization, we know all too well that it’s not enough to have a diverse team. To truly live our values, our staff must have the resources and power to affect change within and outside of our organization. The restructure has given us the chance to cultivate the team we’ve built and tap into our internal wealth of experience, talent, and insight.

Looking ahead to the upcoming 88th Legislative Session, we’re thrilled to share more details of our new structure and how it will propel our efforts to build a state where every Texan has the freedom, resources, and opportunity to thrive.

Community Engagement

To complement and strengthen our partnerships with advocacy organizations throughout Texas that share our vision and values, we have formalized our work to expand and enhance our community relationships across the state. Led by Katie Martin Lightfoot as our first-ever Director of Community Engagement and Advocacy, this new department allows us to get even closer to the people who are most affected by policy outcomes.

Legislative and Advocacy

We’ve changed the name of our “Legislative and Policy Team” to “Legislative and Advocacy Team” to better reflect the work our analysts do to develop people-first policy solutions.

Luis Figueroa has been promoted to Chief of Legislative Affairs – a new role dedicated to government relations strategy and monitoring that advance our mission and deepen our relationships with elected officials at all levels. In his new role, Luis will serve as a special advisor to the CEO and “chief lobbyist,” leading our inside legislative strategy and ensuring our team is prepared for legislative lobbying.

Chandra Villanueva is now our Director of Policy and Advocacy and will oversee our key policy teams – Economic Opportunity, Health & Food Justice, and Invest in Texas. Chandra will supervise our program directors and work closely with them and Luis to develop and execute our Legislative Agenda.

With Chandra previously acting as program director to our Economic Opportunity team, former analyst Jaime Puente has now been promoted to Director of Economic Opportunity.

We also changed the name of our “Health and Wellness team” to “Health and Food Justice” to reflect our focus on creating food security in Texas. Our previous Senior Policy Analyst Rachel Cooper now leads the team as Director of Health and Food Justice as Anne Dunkelberg steps away from management to focus solely on expert policy analysis.

Communications

As our policy work expands, our communication efforts have grown with it. To support the increased demand and broaden our reach, Dany Guerrero has been promoted to Deputy Director of Communications. Previously serving as our first external relations coordinator, Dany will continue to develop engagement with our partners by leading and deploying communication strategies across the state.

We hope you’ll join us in congratulating our colleagues on their new roles! We look forward to seeing how their work will help us deepen our commitment to building a multiracial democracy for our state.

In solidarity,
All of us at Every Texan
