The Texas Family Act: Freedom to Care for Our Newborn Babies

Texans from Amarillo to Brownsville will do anything for our children. However, Texas’ child care crisis challenges most families’ ability to make ends meet. The average cost for infant care in Texas is $777 per month; and in many communities infant care is over $1,000 per month. 

Most working parents do not have the ability to take paid time off from their jobs to care for a newborn baby. All Texan families are worth the economic freedom to care for our newborn babies or recently adopted children -especially when child care is increasingly expensive and unavailable. Together, we can solve this huge gap and make sure the birth of a child doesn’t break the bank and cause unnecessary financial stress on families. 

The solution is the Texas Family Act | HB 3059 introduced by Representative Penny Morales Shaw. The Texas Family Act will guarantee that working parents are able to care for their own children during the first critical weeks after birth or adoption. This program will also play an important role in making child care more affordable and available for Texas’ families.The Texas Family Fund is a publicly administered social insurance wage replacement program. It is by working parents, for working parents.
