Take Action Now to Protect Local Democracy
Tell state leaders that we make the decisions for our communities.
As the Delta variant COVID-19 virus rages out of control, Texas hospitals, medics, and nurses are exhausted and stretched to their limits. Rural school districts are closing — not going remote or virtual, but offering no instruction at all for the time being. State agencies are requesting mortuary trailers in anticipation of more COVID deaths.
In the absence of state action, local jurisdictions across Texas have listened to the needs of their constituents and responded to calls to pass local ordinances that protect our communities. Now the state legislature is attacking the ability of our local elected officials to keep our schools and communities safe.
SB 14 would block cities and counties from passing workplace protections, and HB 141 bans local school districts from keeping our kids and teachers safe during the pandemic by requiring masks.
If state leaders are unwilling to sacrifice their political ambitions to protect the lives of Texans, the legislature should at least get out of the way and allow local school officials, city or county leaders, businesses, or even local health authorities to keep our communities safer and protect working Texans.
Ask your Texas Representative to vote NO on SB 14 and HB 141.
